Special Education
Special Education Services

At Emma Elementary School, we look at each student’s need for special education services on an individualized basis.  The process for placing students in our special education program includes a referral, evaluation, and - if appropriate - identification under one of the areas of disability allowed by the Individuals with Disability Act and North Carolina law.

Once a student has been placed, a team consisting of educators, specialists, and the student’s parents develops an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for the student.  Each IEP is unique to the individual student and his or her needs.  The plan describes the type of services that will be provided to the student as well as the frequency and intensity of the services.  Some students will meet in small groups outside the regular classroom for special education instruction, and others will receive modified instruction inside the regular classroom.
