English Language Learners
English as a Second Language

The English as Second Language program at Emma Elementary School provides daily English language development services to more than 150 students in kindergarten through fourth grade.  We teach small groups of similarly aged students in our ESL classroom, and our instruction is based on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and on the national TESOL language development standards.  We design both instruction and lesson activities to support English Language Learners (ELL) as they develop higher levels of proficiency in listening, reading, speaking, and writing.   Although we teach our ELL students using English, we are capable of providing native language support to Spanish.

In addition to the small group instruction, ELL students are increasing their English proficiency through the classroom use of the SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) model.  SIOP is a research-based framework for lesson design and delivery that enables ELL students to become more proficient with academic language in all subjects.

Here at Emma Elementary, our ESL staff includes Anita Lovejoy and Alice Murphy.
